Introducing the New Ah-Lan Dance Logo

Our thanks to Slimgim Designs for creating the new Ah-Lan Dance logo. It really embodies the spirit and joy of dance!
Orange Ah-Lan Dance Logo

It has already come to represent Ah-lan Dance.  It welcomes and inspires everyone every time they enter the new studio and it graced the back of the dancers as they performed Zumba at the San Francisco Library Chinese New Year Performance.  Being so prominent it was important, that it really represented us and captured the spirit of dance.  It came as no surprise that Slimgim Designs could embody our essence so well, since it is owned by our very own ballet teacher, Kari Gim.

Thanks Kari!

Thank You for Making the Gala a Success!

Dear All,

Picture from the dance drama

Chaityn Isaacson-Brewster and An Hoang as the Bride and Groom in a Yunnan Wedding

A big congratulations to all our dancers who worked so hard, and to our parents, who showed such support and brought the wonderful audiences for our shows!  I heard so many great compliments about our show.  The audience liked our dances, music, costumes, stories, and props.  Some of the audience traveled long distances from other cities to see our performance.  It is so overwhelming to hear so many “excellent,” “extraordinary,” “wonderful,” “spectacular”, “fantastic…”  These good words are for all of you!  Everyone contributed, and we succeeded!  A big thanks to everyone!

Please have a look at this article in the Albany Patch.

-Love Ah-Lan!

Audience, Performer, and Parent Comments

We welcome you to add your own thoughts in the comments section below.

Thank you for creating such a beautiful dance performance this year!   Everyone that I spoke to loved the entire show and in particular the Wedding dance drama.  It was a spectacular and beautiful show!  It was also wonderful to see the development of all your dancers and in particular your high school student dancers.  Their dance was so impressive and powerful!  Wow!  We always appreciate the range of choreography including the dances that challenged and showed the strengths of your dancers.  Thank you also for creating a warm and supportive dance community for all our children.  This is just one of the wonderful gifts you share as a teacher and as an artistic director.  Congratulations!
-Parents Michele Ku and Yuki Nagase

Summer Instructor Spotlight: Ikolo Griffin

To celebrate the start of our second session of summer camp we are spotlighting one of our instructors, Ikolo Griffin, who is teaching his “Just Turns” workshop to the students this summer.

From the age of eight, Ikolo trained at the San Francisco Ballet School, taught by renowned master teachers from around the world. He has danced professionally for over twenty years with San Francisco Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem, Joffrey Ballet, Smuin Ballet, and the San Francisco Opera, among others.

His dancing and teaching speaks for itself.  Watch this clip from our June show to see an inspiring turning variation and learn the four fundamentals of turning.  Re-watch it whenever you want to work on your turns.

Spring Recital 6/16

Camille- Beautiful Chinese Jump

Come see our spring recital; we will be showcasing our ballet and Chinese dance technique.

Spring Recital- The Details
Sunday, June 16th, 2013 – 1p.m.

Albany High School Theater
603 Key Route Boulevard,
Albany, CA 94706

To be a good Chinese Dancer you need to master 3 basics:

1) Good ballet technique
2) Wugong – which will build you a very flexible and strong body
3) Shenyun – the specialized postures, breathing, and delicate physical language unique to Chinese Dance

Our dancers have been working on all three of these areas during class.  Coming up, we will bring these techniques out of the classroom and on to the stage to share with you.  Our dancers have been working really hard to prepare a very exciting show.  There will be an encore performance of our most popular Chinese Dance pieces.  We have also invited a few outstanding professional guest performers who also will be our summer dance teachers.  Come support your dancers and learn about what makes Chinese Dance special on June 16th.
